Scientists believe that cheese can prevent noise induced hearing loss

Scientists reckon that chomping through cheddar and stilton can help repair hearing damage. That’s because cheese contains a chemical compound called D-methionine which has proved in tests with animals to reverse damage to nerve cells in the ear.
Now 600 troops in the US Army are going on a trial diet of cheese to prove the theory. Soldiers exposed to loud blasts can suffer damage to nerve cells in the inner ear which send sound signals to the brain. Doctors leading the US trial said: “We have documented in animal studies that D-methionine can reduce or prevent noise-induced hearing loss. “We now need to determine if it has similar efficacy in humans.”
